Background

Following the entry-into-force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) on 22nd January 2021, the First Meeting of States Parties (MSP1) was convened on 21-23 June 2022 at the Austria Centre in Vienna under the Presidency of Ambassador Alexander Kmentt (Austrian Foreign Ministry). At MSP1 it was decided that the Second Meeting of TPNW States Parties (MSP2) would be convened at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 27th November to 1st December 2023 under the Presidency of Mexico – Ambassador Juan Ramón de la Fuente (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mexico). The Third Meeting of TPNW States Parties (MSP3) is scheduled to be held in 2025 also at United Nations Headquarters in New York under the Presidency of Kazakhstan – Ambassador Akan Rakhmetullin. This online discussion will address the proceedings and outcomes of MSP2 and also review the proposed work programme and prospects for MSP3.

Tariq Rauf

Member of the Board of Directors of Atomic Reporters. He is a former Head of Verification and Security Policy, Alternate Head of NPT Delegation, IAEA, and provided input on the verification and other provisions of the draft of the TPNW that was adopted in July 2017 by 122 UN Member States.
